Durris off to a flying start
On Sunday 16th March, SERC Grampian, held the second pleasure ride of the season and the first competitive ride at Durris near Stonehaven. The weather, although raining initially, allowed for magnificent views as far north as Bennachie and down towards the sea.
In total there were over 40 riders out enjoying the Sunday morning ride varying from the 17km pleasure ride to the 32k competitive ride. Both rides enjoyed soft forestry tracks for canters as well as the more traditional forestry commission tracks. Thanks to Katie Keith, who along with Lisa Maitland, Lorna Hogg, Lynda Keeler, Amy Collins, Molly Atkinson Lizzy Thornton, marked out the routes, ensuring there were very few wrong turns along the ride, allowing for a good chat and the opportunity to absorb the views.
At this ride Lesley McDonald of Ardene House was the vet, David Clucas the vet steward with, Barbara Winmill and Marlene Arthur assisting, ensuring that all horses were checked before and after the event. Best condition in the pleasure/training category was awarded to Donna Hemmings with Cumbria Sameh and in the competitive class, Joy ridden by Deborah Wilson.
The next event takes place near Methlick on the 6th April and should you be interested in taking part in a pleasure ride or finding out more, details and application forms are available at www.serc-grampian.org.uk. If you love working with horses, either as a rider or non rider, and enjoy meeting new people, feel free to come and help like Rob Winmill, the timekeeper, Amy Collins, the venue steward, Douglas McAllister, who organised the maps and along with Jane Hollstein, organised the delivery and removal of the SERC Caravan, and Malcolm Milne, Carol Henderson, Judith Barker and Sue Duncan who were the checkpoint stewards. Markers and de-markers were also: Lynda Keeler, Amy Collins and Molly Atkinson, Maps – Douglas McAllister, Lunches – Barbara Winmill. Last but by no means least, the very person around whom it all revolved – Ruth Riddell, responsible for the smooth running of the admin/caravan.
It’s a great way to see and learn what goes on as well as getting a FREE lunch with crème eggs!
Happy Easter. |
