HORSE AND PONY CREMATION

Disposing of the body of your best friend after the fateful day finally comes is not easy.  This service, offered by the Scottish Agricultural College (SAC), may be of interest to many Scottish horse owners now that on-farm burial of livestock is banned.

Horse cremation is carried out by SAC at Craibstone near Aberdeen, and the service covers the northern half of the country as far south as Edinburgh.  Smaller animals can be cremated at other SAC centres throughout the Scotland.  They will arrange for collection of the carcass and returning the ashes to your vet.  You can have either all the ashes or just a sample which comes in a really nice stoneware vase.  They can usually collect at 24 hours notice but ask you to make arrangements ahead of this if you can.

The cost is dependant on the weight of the animal.

Ring Mairiead MacLennan on 01224 711177 or email VCAberdeen@ed.sac.ac.uk for further information.  We (Simon & Sue Jacyna) know from experience that she is extremely helpful and sympathetic.

Editor’s note:  I too have used SAC at Craibstone recently and can recommend their services without reservation.
